Weekly Photo: Melbourne 2006
With Ashes fever taking over the World I think back to 28 December 2006 and our day at the MCG in Melbourne.
I had always wanted to go on an Ashes Tour and, in particular attend the 100,000 seater Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day ever since I first saw it on Boxing Day 1990, there’s something about it.
We arrived in Melbourne on Christmas Eve and set about beating the jet lag from our journey which started at 10.00am in the UK as we had to get the train from Manchester to London thanks to the fog playing havoc with the flights. We arrived in Melbourne some 30 hours later.
We awoke on Christmas Day and headed to the barbecue on the banks of the Yarra for our slightly different Christmas. There were seven of us and we had packed our sunglasses, shorts and bikinis for a scorching Christmas down under. What we got was the worst Christmas Day weather I have ever experienced. Here’s a picture of us avoiding the hailstones under the marquee.
There were over 30,000 England fans in Melbourne for this test match and the atmosphere was phenomenal. We even got to meet the Barmy Army Legend himself, Vic Flowers a.k.a. Jimmy…
We had a great five days in Melbourne before heading to Sydney for New Year.
I could do a post about the finer points of Melbourne but I don’t think I could do as good a job as Andy Hayes from Sharing Experiences who has a healthy obsession with the place. His piece about Melbourne with some great photographs can be found through this link. Well worth a read.
