Excitement Building & Quasi Planning
So many people say that half the fun in going away is in the planning. I’ve never agreed, sure it’s fun to flick through brochures and pick out your hotel for your two week break but if that’s only half the fun you have then maybe you should have picked a different holiday!
This time, however, I’m proper enjoying the planning of our trip. It’s strange really, because as of yet we don’t have that much planned but a rough plan is coming together and I’ve really enjoyed reading fellow bloggers’ advice on destinations and equipment.
I’ve become somewhat obsessed with keeping my luggage light. I have a target weight of 15.0 kilos when I put my luggage on the scales at Manchester airport on 13 August. 15 kilos for 10 weeks travelling, I’d be genuinely proud of this.
I’ll do a full breakdown of what’s going in my bag in the next couple of weeks but I’m even getting excited about buying a travel washing line from ASDA.
OK, so what’s the current plan? We have tried to keep things as loose as possible to give us the most amount of flexibility when we’re away. When we went away for six weeks in 2007 we were very much tied to flight and hotel reservations – it was quite hectic and we ended up spending too long in some places and not enough time in others. That being said, we are new to the ‘backpacking & hostel’ thing and have eased ourselves in with reservations in hostels at our first two destinations of Singapore & Kuala Lumpur.
That will take up the first seven days and from then on we’ve decided to head over to Vietnam, probably Hanoi, and spend three weeks working our way down the Vietnamese coastline and up through Cambodia & Laos, we definitely want to go to Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and MUST do the River Tubing in Laos but other than that we’ve no idea where we’ll end up during this time.
It’s then on to Thailand for three or four weeks. Again, no real plan during this time save for the fact we’ll be a the Full Moon Party in Ko Phangan on 4 October. From there it’s back to Australia where we’ll be starting on Whitsundays’ Coast for Pezza’s birthday on 7 October and then working our way up and down the East Coast before returning home from Sydney on 22 October.
As well as our flights and accommodation in Singapore & KL we have sorted our transport from Ko Phangan to Whitsundays.
It all kicks off five weeks from today.

Hi Andy,
Sounds like you’ve got a great trip planned. We did the circuit a few years ago and had an incredible time. Are you going to the Plain of Jars in Laos?
I also wanted to say thanks for stopping by My Several Worlds and commenting. It’s always nice to meet a new traveling friend. Happy globetrotting!
Cheers Carrie,
I’ll be sure to add the Plain of Jars to the list of things to do, especially if we pass through Xieng Khouang. At the moment the plans are very loose, we’ll see where the wind takes us!
Andy
So you plan the great trip, like it also like your blog, it’s very nice.
