Krabi (Part 1) – Like being in a Bounty advert

When we were landing in Krabi we did what everybody always does (normal people anyway, not the ‘too cool for school’ brigade who like to pretend not to be bothered and keep reading their book) and looked out the window to see what it was like. You can’t see much, it’s usually a bit cloudy this time of year and what there was around the airport was only vast green fields. Krabi, being in the tropics, has three seasons; hot, rainy and cool – we arrived in the transition between rainy and cool (cool being 33 degrees) so the vegetation here can really thrive.

We were expecting to be met at the airport by a dude from the hotel. We were expecting this because the hotel said they would but it appears that the travel agent didn’t give them our flight time so we had to get a cab to their little depot. Here, we should have got a car to the next stop but there were none so the porter of this hotel that is a member of ‘The Leading Hotels in the World’ sent this chap to pick us up:

It was only a few minutes to the pier where the Rayavadee speedboat was waiting to whizz us to Nammo Beach to check in. It was this part of the journey that gave us our first sight of what Krabi is all about – a phenomenal mixture of huge limestone cliffs covered in lush vegetation cutting spectacularly through stunning beaches and clear green seas. I could have put tons of pictures on here but they’ll all be on Facebook soon.

The weather was a little cloudy when we arrived but we were told we were lucky as it had just finished raining for 4 days. The dude went through the facilities in the hotel in phenomenal depth when all we wanted to do was run onto the beach and begin the assault on the sun. That being said the hotel and room are first rate – just the right man-made accompaniment for the natural surroundings.
These are pictures of the upstairs of our villa and our own little spa pool!

That night a quick bite to eat was had on the beach and we found a little road off Railay Beach (one of the three beaches that the hotel backs onto) that is called Downtown Railay. One of the bars has the ever so effective yet phenomenally simple idea of popping a few mats and candles down on the beach to make a genuinely relaxing place to tuck in!

It’s certainly not a place to get tubed each and every night, so the three days here is probably about enough: enough to fall in love with the place, enough to get the most out of it and enough to leave it pining for more.

Whilst we’re here Karen is still on the look out for Madelaine McCann – I’ll let you know how that one turns out.

I’ll be back again in a day or two with the rest of Krabi and all the photos from the trip to Phi Phi (including our trip to the beach from The Beach). I’m a little behind with the Blogging as we’ve now made it to Brisbane and are looking forward to a trip to Australia Zoo tomorrow – luckily for us it’s a day in honour of the great man!
